Opioid Misuse Prevention Workshop, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association
The opioid epidemic is having a profound impact on families across the Commonwealth, with growing numbers of children and youth traumatized by the consequences of opioid use in their homes—consequences that include increased risk of neglect and abuse, high levels of stress, housing instability, and separation from familial or social supports,. , They are also more likely than their counterparts to go without food and supervision, to witness a death due to overdose, and to develop a substance use addiction themselves.
School personnel, including athletic personnel, can play an important role in identifying and supporting students who may be affected by opioid-related trauma. This session will explore current research on the impact of opioid use disorders home on youth, strategies for identifying opioid-affected youth, and evidence-based processes and interventions for supporting these young people.
This workshop is for administrators and wellness personnel working in Massachusetts middle and high schools.
